Established by the United States Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1st, 1872, Yellowstone National Park is widely held to be the first national park in the world. It is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially the Old Faithful Geyser. In fact, have of the world’s geothermal features are in Yellowstone, fueled by this ongoing volcanism. Law flows and rocks from volcanic eruptions cover most of the land area of Yellowstone. While initially overseen by the U.S. Army, by 1917 the administration of the park was transferred to the National Park Service.
The 1999 Yellowstone Silver Dollar was issued to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the park’s establishment by Congress in 1872. The obverse of the coin features one of the park’s geysers. The reverse design features an American bison with a sun rising in the background.
Minted at the San Francisco Mint, this coin has a mintage of 187,595. It comes in its original government packaging.
