Prior to the Silver Eagle being released in 1986, the Trade Dollar was America's largest silver dollar by weight. Trade Dollars were produced from 1873 through 1885 and were intended for circulation in Asia to compete with crown-sized coins from around the world, most of the production was send to China. Many pieces that circulated in Asia were counter-stamped with Chinese characters known as chopmarks.
