The Mercury Dime represented a welcome change in U.S. coinage design. First introduced in 1916, the new dime design featured a portrait of Liberty facing left, wearing a winged cap. This cap symbolized freedom, a reference to freed Roman slaves who wore such caps. But because of the resemblance to the Roman God, Mercury, the coin quickly became known as the "Mercury" Dime. The reverse blends a Roman fasces (axe surrounded by a tied bundle of sticks) and an olive branch, indicating America's military readiness but also their desire for peace. Issued until 1945, the Mercury Dime series is one of the most popular in all of American numismatics.
