Dedicated on October 28, 1886 as a gift from France, the Statue of Liberty is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The status is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess, who bears a torch and the tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence. The statue is an icon of freedom and the United States: a welcoming signal to immigrants arriving from abroad.
To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the United States minted ordered three difference commemorate coins: a clad half dollar, a silver dollar, and a gold five dollar. The Silver Dollar depicts the Statue of Liberty in front of Ellis Island along with the inscription, "Ellis Island Gateway to America." While the other side depicts her torch and says "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free."
This 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial Proof Silver Dollar was minted in San Francisco. It has a mintage of 6,414,638.
