The China Panda was introduced in 1983 as a 27-gram (.900 fine silver) coin. In 1987 it was re-introduced as a true 1 oz. issue produced in .999 fine silver. Its denomination is 10 Yuan (The Chinese equivalent to the dollar).
The 2013 Panda coins keep the traditional obverse design that has been the hallmark of the great series, featuring the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. The Taoist temple complex was constructed from 1406 to 1420. The complex was extended and renamed Temple of Heaven in the 16th century. The reverse design features 2 playful pandas, sitting and eating with a field of bamboo in the background.
Popularity: the American Silver Eagle is #1, but #'s 2 & 3 are the Panda and Maple Leaf. Both of these issues were introduced after the successful launch of the American Eagle program. The China Panda has a limited edition of just 600,000 pieces - small when compared to the US Mint's 8 to 10 Million.
