In 2010, the U.S. Mint released a NEW design on the reverse of the Lincoln Cent. As Director of the Mint Edmund C. Moy referenced at the release - "This 1-cent coin honors the preservation of the union, which was Abraham Lincoln's ultimate achievement. Because of his Presidency, despite bitter regional enmity and a horrific civil war, we remained the United States of America." According to Moy, the Union Shield design will appear on the reverse of the Lincoln Cents struck for the next 50 years, unless the Treasury Secretary exercises his statutory discretion to change the design.
