1964 Kennedy Half Dollar - 1oz Copper Medallion
In 1964, the United States Mint made history when it issued the Kennedy Half Dollar in memory of the former President. John F. Kennedy was the 35th President of the United States of America. During his Presidency, he wasted no time dismantling Eisenhower's methods. Kennedy openly supported racial integration and civil rights. Tragically, Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas on November 22nd, 1963. To this day conspiracies surround his death, and doubts remain as to the guilt of Lee Harvey Oswald.
Use of existing works by Mint sculptors Gilroy Roberts and Frank Gasparro allowed dies to be prepared quickly, and striking of the new coins began in January of 1964. After the Mint produced trial strikes, Jacqueline and Robert Kennedy were invited to view them. Mrs. Kennedy viewed the designs favorably but suggested that the hair be altered slightly.
