The World’s Columbian Exposition, or World’s Fair, was held in 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival to the New World in 1492. The Exposition was an influential social and cultural even and had a profound effect on architecture, sanitation, the arts, Chicago’s self-image, and American industrial optimism. The fair also served to show the world that Chicago had risen from the ashes of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
The 1892 and 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition Half Dollar was the first United States commemorative coin. The obverse depicted a portrait of Columbus, while the reverse represented Columbus’s flagship the Santa Maria above two hemispheres.
This is the 1892 Columbus Half Dollar. It will arrive to you encapsulated and with a black felt pouch.
