Born in 1820, Susan Brownell Anthony was an American social reformer and feminist who played a pivotal role in the women’s suffrage movement. Anthony traveled extensively in support of women’s suffrage, giving as many as 75-100 speeches per year and working on many state campaigns. She was also pivotal in creating the International Council of Women.
The Susan B. Anthony Dollar, the first non-fictitious woman to be depicted on a U.S. Coin, was minted from 1979-1981 and again in 1999. The original design depicted an allegorical representation of Liberty, but organizations and individuals in Congress called for the coin to depict a woman. Several proposals were submitted, and social reformed Susan B. Anthony was selected as the design subject. The reverse design of the Eisenhower Dollar was kept.
