The Jefferson Nickel was first issued in 1938, featuring a portrait of President Thomas Jefferson. The reverse design portrays Monticello, Jefferson's Virginia estate.
The Jefferson Nickel was produced at three U.S. Mints: Philadelphia and Denver (Uncirculated) and San Francisco (Proof). In 1954 the San Francisco Mint halted production, resuming in 1968.
