Rutherford B. Hayes was the19th President of the United States. He was renowned for his dignity and honesty. As President, Hayes ended Reconstruction in the former Confederate States by withdrawing the last federal troops. With a Democratic Congress opposed to his policies and bitter about the election, however, he was able to achieve little. Intending to serve only one term, he retired in 1881 and returned to his home in Fremont Ohio, where he died January 17th 1893.
