Thomas Jefferson was born in April 13, 1743 in Shadwell, VA. In 1769, he was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses and began building his home at Monticello in Virginia. Three years later he married Martha Wayles Skelton. Jefferson represented Virginia at the Continental Congress, and in 1776 he drafted the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson first ran for President in 1796, but lost to Adams and became his Vice President. Four years later he ran for President again, and won. During his two terms, Jefferson's most well-known accomplishment was the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, which resulted in almost doubling the size of the United States.
The historic Presidential Dollar series began in 2007 with coins for George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. This is the FIRST coin program in U.S. History to honor all of America's Presidents, and it is destined to be the most popular collection in history, even BIGGER and more popular than the State Quarters!
