James A. Garfield was the 20th President of the United States. Prior to being elected, he served the Ohio State Senate, and for the United States Congress for almost two decades. Garfield would only serve as President for a brief 200 days, the second shortest tenure in United States history. Just fourth months into his term, Garfield was shot while entering a railroad station in Washington, D.C. One of the bullets would remain lodged near his spine and cause his eventual death 80 days later.
The historic Presidential Dollar series began in 2007 with coins for George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. This is the FIRST coin program in U.S. History to honor all of America's Presidents, and it is destined to be the most popular collection in history, even BIGGER and more popular than the State Quarters!
