Chester Arthur was the 21st President of the United States. He ascended to the Presidency after the death of James Garfield. Prior to his years in politics, Arthur was a school teacher, a principle, and an attorney. At the outset of the Civil War, he was given the rank of Brigadier General and was initially assigned to the quartermaster department. Arthur was quickly promoted to inspector general, and then quartermaster general. Since Arthur was a widower, his sister served as White House hostess during his Presidency. Arthur also presided over the rebirth of the United States Navy.
The historic Presidential Dollar series began in 2007 with coins for George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. This is the FIRST coin program in U.S. History to honor all of America's Presidents, and it is destined to be the most popular collection in history, even BIGGER and more popular than the State Quarters!
