Andrew Johnson was the 17th President of the United States. He took office after the assassination of President Lincoln. Johnson's tenure was controversial. He was the only Southern Senator to keep his post upon the South's secession from the North. Johnson also supported Lincoln's military policies during the Civil War, and once the war was over his reconciliatory policies towards the South made him unpopular in the North. Johnson was the first United States President to undergo an impeachment trial. After his term as President, he served as a Democratic Senator from Tennessee.
The historic Presidential Dollar series began in 2007 with coins for George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. This is the FIRST coin program in U.S. History to honor all of America's Presidents, and it is destined to be the most popular collection in history, even BIGGER and more popular than the State Quarters!
