Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He was elected president in 1860, and was the first Republican President. Lincoln was known as the President who led this country through its greatest internal crisis, the American Civil War, while preserving the Union. His Emancipation Proclamation, along with the passage of the 13th Amendment, ended slavery. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address became an iconic symbol of the nation's duty. On April 14th 1864, Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head by John Wilkes Booth. He died the next day, making him the first President in United States history to be assassinated.
