John Quincy Adams was an American diplomat and politician who served as the 6th President of the United States. He was a member of the Federalist, Democratic-Republican, National Republican, and later the Anti-Masonic and Whig parties. As President he sought to modernize the American economy and promote education. He is best known as a diplomat who shaped America's foreign policy in line with his ardently nationalist commitment to America's republican values. He passed on February 23, 1848 after almost two decades as a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts.
