Description

In 1971 the U.S. Mint brought back a dollar denominated coin for the 1st time since the Peace Dollar Series ended in 1935. It's theme on the obverse was to celebrate the life of President, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, 10/14/1890 - 3/28/69, nicknamed "Ike". He was a Five Star General in the U.S. Army, a U.S. Politician, and the 34th President of the United States (1953-1961). He served as Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe during WWII. In 1951, he became the first supreme commander of NATO. As President, the accolades continued with the overseeing of the cease-fire of the Korean War, kept up the pressure on the Soviet Union during the Cold War, made nuclear weapons a higher defense priority, launched the Space Race, enlarged the Social Security program, and began the Interstate Highway System. Then on the reverse of the coin, the Apollo 11 moon landing is commemorated. Due to the significance of the year 1969, the same year of Eisenhower's death. These dollars were issued between 1971 and 1978 and struck at the Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco Mints. In 1971 the Eisenhower Dollar was only released as a special "silver" collectible and never released into circulation. This special "silver" version was struck at the San Francisco Mint in Uncirculated and Proof conditions. Its popularity resulted in a Copper Nickel issue being released into circulation in 1973. The series was last struck in 1978. Between 1971 and 1978 the U.S. Mint issued 32 different issues. They were made out of 2 metals - Copper Nickel or Silver, and then stuck in Uncirculated or Proof condition. This piece is in Uncirculated condition and is presented in a capsule and protective pouch
