The United States Army was founded in 1775. On December 1st, 2008 President Bush signed into law the "United States Army Commemorative Coin Act," which autroized the United States Mint to pay tribute to the founding of the United States Army. Three coins were minted to honor the army - a Half Dollar, a Silver Dollar, and a $5 gold.
The theme of the half dollar was service in peace. It portrays a U.S. Army soldier surveying, two servicemen building a flood wall, and a Redstone Army rocked used during early space exploration. The other side symbolizes the United States Army as the first military service to defend the country. It features an enlisted Continental soldier armed with a musket and surrounded by 13 stars to represent the 13 Original Colonies.
This Proof 2011 U.S. Army Half Dollar was minted in San Francisco. It has a mintage of 68,332.
