In 1997, the United States Mint celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Jackie Robinson's Rookie Season (he was awarded Rookie of the Year in 1947) with a very limited special tribute Dollar.
Born January 31st, 1919, Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play in the major leagues in the modern era. He broke the baseball color line when the Brooklyn Dodgers started him at first base on April 15, 1947. The Dodgers, by playing Robinson, ended the racial segregation that had relegated black players to the so-called "Negro" leagues since the 1880s. Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.
This Jackie Robinson Uncirculated Silver Dollar was minted at the San Francisco Mint with a mintage of 30,180. It will come in its original government packaging.
