Founded by a group of Separatists, the Plymouth Colony was one of the earliest successful colonies to be founded by the English in North America, and was the first sizable permanent English settlement in the New England region. A significant portion of the citizens of Plymouth were fleeing religious persecution and searching for a place to worship as they saw fit. The social and legal systems of the colony reflected these beliefs and British influence.
To commemorate the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, MA in 1620, Congress authorized a special half dollar. The 1920 Pilgrim Tercentenary depicts Governor William Bradford on the obverse and the Mayflower on the reverse.
