Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. Born in Illinois in 1909, he served as President from March 1861 until his assassination in April of 1865. A largely self-educated man, he became a lawyer in Illinois, a Whig Party leader, and a member of the Illinois House of Representatives.
Best known for preserving the Union through the Civil War, Lincoln also abolished slavery, strengthened the federal government, and modernized the economy. An exceptionally astute politician deeply involved with power issues in each state, Lincoln reached out to “War Democrats” (those who supported the North against the South), and managed his own re-election campaign in the 1964 Presidential Election.
To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the admission of Illinois into the Union, the 1918 Lincoln-Illinois Centennial Half Dollar was minted. It was the first souvenir piece for such an event. The obverse shows the head of Lincoln, while the reverse is based on the Illinois State Seal.
