In 2004, the United States Mint honored President Jefferson, his frontier ambassadors Lewis and Clark, and the Native Americans who sustained them, on the bicentennial of the expedition that changed the United States forever. The Corps of Volunteers of Northwestern Discovery, as it was originally known, is still regarded by many as one of the most successful military expeditions in American History.
The Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Silver Dollar was designed by Donna Weaver. The obverse depicts Captains Lewis and Clark on a steam bank planning another day of exploration. The reverse features two feathers to represent the many Native American cultures touched by the Corps of Discovery. It also features an image of the original Jefferson Peace Medal presented to Native American nations during the expedition, surround by 17 stars that represented the number of states in the union in 1804.
The 2004 Lewis and Clarke Bicentennial Proof Silver Dollar was minted in Philadelphia. It has a mintage of 351,989.
This coin will come in its original government packaging.
