Opened in 1854 to serve the gold mines of the California Gold Rush, the San Francisco Mint has been minting coins for over 150 years. In 1874, the Mint moved into a new building affectionately referred to as the Old United States Mint, or the Granite Lady. It was one of the few buildings to survive the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It served until 1937, when the present facility was opened. To acknowledge the important contributions made by these facility, the United States Mint authorized the creation of two coins: a Silver Dollar, and a $5 gold.
