As the first military engagements of the American Revolutionary War, the Battles of Lexington and Concord hold a special place in U.S. History and People’s hearts. They were fought on April 9th, 1775, and marked the outbreak of open armed conflict between the Kingdom of Great Britain and the thirteen original colonies.
To commemorate the 150th Anniversary of these two battles that marked the beginning of the end of British rule in America, the Lexington-Concord Sesquicentennial Half Dollar was minted in 1925. A statue of the familiar Minute Man is depicted on the obverse, and the Old Belfry at Lexington is the reverse device.
